Government Dental College, Silchar is a government dental college of Assam. It was established in 2018 by Government of Assam. The college offers 5 year full-time degree course of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS). The college is affiliated with Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences. It conducts both undergraduate programs (Degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS)) and postgraduate programs. [ 2 ] The only dental teaching hospital in Sri Lanka, the Peradeniya Dental (Teaching) Hospital functions as the clinical unit of the faculty. the Dental School of the University of Ceylon was established in 1943.
In 1980, the Dental School was departmentalized into 5 departments, and in October 1986 it achieved Faculty status. Two other departments were added to the faculty in 1990 and 1997. The Institute imparts BDS (Bachelor in Dental Surgery) and MDS training in accordance with the rules laid down by the Dental Council of India, New Delhi and Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical Education University. The Institute is affiliated to the said university for the purpose of examination and award of BDS and MDS Degree.
The following undergraduate programmes are offered: [1] (1) Bachelor of Science in clinical medicine (2) Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (3) Bachelor of Science in biomedical sciences (4) Bachelor of Dental Surgery (5) Bachelor of Science in public health and (6) Bachelor of Science in environmental health.
The institute has a separate College of Dental Surgery that accepts 60 students for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery program every year through competitive entrance examinations. A total of nine separate Dental Departments function smoothly in the university premises that are as follows: Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology [9]
