Since 2004, the station has been a stop on the Rhine-Neckar S-Bahn network and a new platform was built near the former station building for it. The station was given its present name, Heidelberg-Altstadt at the 2008/2009 timetable change on 14 December 2008.

The Universitätsplatz ("University square"), previously known as Paradeplatz, Ludwigsplatz, and Langemarckplatz (1937-1945) is an open square in Heidelberg's old town, the Altstadt. The Hauptstrasse runs along the north side, the west side is marked by Grabengasse, which follows the line of the original city walls.

The hill is linked to Altstadt, by the Heidelberger Bergbahn, a two section historic funicular railway that stops at Heidelberg Castle, located on the lower slopes of the Königstuhl, the Molkenkur restaurant/hotel, and the ultimate stop at the mountain top which host a restaurant, an entertainment park for kids and various walking paths.
