Manassas (/ m ə ˈ n æ s ə s / [7]), formerly Manassas Junction, [8] is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 42,772 at the 2020 Census. [ 9 ] It is the county seat of Prince William County , although the two are separate jurisdictions. [ 10 ]
The courthouse complex itself is located in a Prince William County enclave surrounded by the city of Manassas. Prince William County, Manassas, and Manassas Park share a single judicial system (courts) and Constitutional offices (Commonwealth's Attorney, Sheriff, Circuit Court Clerk).
Republican Harry J. Parrish, who had previously served as a Manassas council member, was elected to represent District 50 in 1981, which he did continuously for the following 25 years. His health declined in later years but he nevertheless defeated a 2005 primary challenge, and served until his death on March 28, 2006.
The Prince William Board of County Supervisors is the policy-making body for the government of Prince William County, Virginia. The county is divided into seven magisterial districts: Brentsville, Coles, Gainesville, Neabsco, Occoquan, Potomac, and Woodbridge. The town of Manassas became large enough for the Virginia General Assembly to incorporate it as a city in the 1970s, which caused several complications for the old courthouse. After negotiations, title to the courthouse building and the jail (razed years later) remained in the County, and various town (city) offices moved out of the building.
The district includes all of Rappahannock County, Fauquier County, and Loudoun County, parts of Fairfax County and Prince William County, as well as the independent cities of Manassas and Manassas Park.
