I have found tons of information on most every fly I have wanted to ty, but there is very little in the way of gar pike flys, both on this site and youtube. I am unsure as to what rope and materials to use, any help?
Whatever the fish you catch or kill, I believe you should use that fish. I grew up seeing people catch gar, from small to large, who then just threw them on the bank to die. They caught 300 pound alligator gar in downtown Waco, hung them up for everyone to see, and then let them rot. I never agree with that. Gar are ancient; they reproduce slowly.
1. The article makes the argument that if you use a rope fly and tangle the rope fibers in the gars teeth AND the gar breaks off, there is no way for the gar to untangle the rope fibers from its teeth. The gar will starve to death because the rope will become intertwined with both the upper and lower jaws. The gar will not be able to feed. 2.
I live in Kansas and have fished for gar many times. Crazy because every gar I have ever caught has been on a modified rope fly. The only thing I do is add a little flash to the rope. Blue and pearl flash to be exact. Some times you have to tease them like a cat with a string when they follow. If they do follow, strip faster. Make them chase it.
A couple of long nose and spotted gar. The larger gar are a lot fun to play, but unfortunately the smaller gar tend to not put up much resistance. This one was 4 1/2 ft long, largest I've managed came in at 5 ft and 20 lbs. Those are fun ! You can see the rope fly present before landing and releasing the fish.

Fresh water is widely variable. In the South, we have warm water species. In some places we have Alligator Gar, Rio Grande Ciclids and imported tropical fish like Peacock Bass and Mayan Ciclids. Those species cannot live where the water gets too cold. But there are not many of those fish.
Hello fellow fly tyers, Lately I have been shooting a variety of birds in order to supply myself with free feathers. I'm new to the fly tying game so I'm not really familiar with what types of feathers to use for different par
Hi all, I was at the local fly shop today looking for big hooks for pike season and I came across Mustad Signature Circle Streamer Hooks (2x heavy, 1x long). They look pretty sweet! I was reading places and I read that you didnt have to set the hook with these, that they automatically do it for y...
