During the early 1950s, Charles H. Zimmerman of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) developed a system for control of a rotorcraft in which, with the rotors mounted on the underside of the aircraft, the machine could be steered by the pilot through the simple shifting of his weight [2] and kept stable through the actions of his natural reflexes. [3]
The original concept had been developed by Charles H. Zimmerman in the late 1940s. [2] Further development followed, both by Hiller Aircraft and the De Lackner Company. There were two main models, the ONR model 1031-A-1, and the somewhat larger VZ-1 Pawnee model produced in 1956 for the U.S. Army. Three of each model were built as prototypes.
Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey, the only crewed tiltrotor in production to date. A tiltrotor is a type of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft that convert from vertical to horizontal flight by rotating propellers or ducted fans from horizontal positions like conventional aircraft propellers to vertical like a helicopter's rotors.
XV-15 taking off at NASA Dryden. One of the major problems with the early tiltrotor aircraft designs was that the driveshafts carrying power from the fuselage out to the wingtip rotors, along with the gearbox and tilting mechanisms at the wingtips, had substantial loads placed upon them and were heavy.
In the US, Hiller Aircraft had been working on a number of ducted fan flying platforms originally designed by Charles H. Zimmerman. The Hiller VXT-8 Coleopter was a proposed annular wing VTOL aircraft designed in the late 1950s, inspired by the French SNECMA Coléoptère. After some early successes, the Army demanded a series of changes that ...
