Arthur Raymond Hibbert (5 March 1924 – 21 December 2008), known as Christopher Hibbert, was an English author, popular historian and biographer. He has been called "a pearl of biographers" ( New Statesman ) and "probably the most widely-read popular historian of our time and undoubtedly one of the most prolific" ( The Times ).

The siege of Cawnpore was a key episode in the Indian Rebellion of 1857.The besieged East India Company forces and civilians in Cawnpore (now Kanpur) were duped into a false assurance of a safe passage to Allahabad by the rebel forces under Nana Sahib.
Mintguy says above “The CLASSIC work on this subject (published in 1980) is The Great Mutiny: India, 1857 by Christopher Hibbert. I agree that this is a classic work, but only in terms of a thoroughgoing reiteration of the partial histories written by the British to justify their empire.
