As far as I can tell, the rounded tip looks more like the sabers in the original trilogy, while the pointed tip looks more like sabers in the prequels. This is correct. As mentioned above, the difference is only cosmetic. I try to go for rounded tip for safety's sake, but that's just because I tend to use stabs in sparring.
The hum was really easy to do, works especially well when you want a short, erratic sound for a hum that loops perfectly. Just get a short piece of the sound you want to make your hum (Pikachu's electric attack in this case), copy it, paste it literally next to it in the sound editor, and then reverse the speed.

In the fictional Star Wars universe, lightsabers indeed do not require scabbards because there is no blade when the lightsaber is off.
