That said, SGC is a reputable grading company as well, and I would not assume that any card in a SGC holder is in there because it didn't get a particular grade from PSA. For vintage baseball (pre-war), SGC is actually the grading company of choice for a lot of collectors. I do think that SGC is more lax on centering issues, as pclpads alluded to.
February 10, 2016 6:48AM. SGC has a very high reputation, especially with the vintage card market. I personally like SGC for vintage cards--especially pre-1960--because the cards pop with color. You'll see all over this board and others that there are mixed reviews on the crossover grading comparison.
Bought two SGC cards in the last week - An SGC 7.5 1957 Herzog Rookie and an SGC 8 1967 Torre. Would still have bought those cards today and expect that will be the case a year from now. Counter scenario - PSA lets you put SGC cards into your registry set.
The issue I have with newer graded SGC is they don't measure all cards so a lot of shorties in 71 and 75 get graded, they don't deduct for PD as much as they should and they allow MC backs in grades 7 and higher. I paid a premium as it is a card that usually has centering problems and this one was centered. The card arrived and I was shocked to see deep rubberband crimps on the L/R edges.
