Cyclone Leonta struck on 9 March 1903, and the deaths of seven patients in the wrecked hospital may be attributed to it. The brick Grammar School was partially demolished. Ernest William "Ted" Harding (12 June 1921 – 3 February 2004) was an Australian politician and rugby league footballer. Born in Bowen, Queensland, he was educated at Townsville Grammar School before serving in the military 1942–44.
St Patrick's College was founded around the same time as the Townsville Grammar School, [4] possibly in 1878, by a group of Irish nuns from the Sisters of Mercy order.
