The city of Dhule is the administrative headquarters of the district. It is part of North Maharashtra. [1] The Dhule district previously comprised tracts of land predominantly inhabited by tribal populations. It was then bifurcated on 1 July 1998 into two separate districts now known as Dhule and Nandurbar, the latter comprising the tribal region.

On 1 July 1998 Dhule was bifurcated as two separate districts now known as Dhule and Nandurbar. Nandurbar is a tribal-dominated district, The district headquarters are located at Nandurbar city. The district occupies an area of 5,955 square kilometres (2,299 sq mi) and has a population of 1,648,295 of which 16.71% were urban (as of 2011).
As per orders of Delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly constituencies Order, 2008, No. 6 Dhule Rural Assembly constituency is composed of the following: Dhule Tehsil (Part), Revenue Circle - Lamkani, Songir, Fagane, Chinchkhede, Mukati, Dhule, Kusumbe, Arvi and Shirur of Dhule district.
Dhule lies in the Khandesh region, which forms the northwest corner of the Deccan Plateau. Dhule City is a part of khandesh region. The Dhule district is bordered in the west by the Gujarat State and in the north by Madhya Pradesh along with Nandurbar district, and in the south and east by Nashik district and Jalgaon District respectively.
