An unusual singing bird box by Frères Rochat, ca. 1810. The bird is shown in a tiny cage, not concealed inside the box as usual. A singing bird box (boîte à oiseau chanteur in French) is a box, usually rectangular-shaped, which contains within a miniature automaton singing bird concealed below an oval lid and activated by means of an operating lever.
Signatures: Bird movement: punched FR twice - within an oval, No.116. Punched French hallmarks. Maker’s mark: JI. Dim. 21 x 11 x 17.78 cm. The cage and mounts are made from gold and the musical and singing bird mechanisms hidden within the base. This object is also a jewellery box.
Johann Matthäus Bechstein (11 July 1757 – 23 February 1822) was a German naturalist, forester, ornithologist, entomologist, and herpetologist. In Great Britain , he was known for his treatise on singing birds ( Naturgeschichte der Stubenvögel , Natural History of Cage Birds , 1795).
