There are three stages to the Tomasulo algorithm: "Issue", "Execute", "Write Result". In an extension to the algorithm, there is an additional "Commit" stage. During the Commit stage, instruction results are stored in a register or memory. The "Write Result" stage is modified to place results in the re-order buffer.
In other words, this register is used to access data and instructions from memory during the execution phase of instruction. MAR holds the memory location of data that needs to be accessed. When reading from memory, data addressed by MAR is fed into the MDR (memory data register) and then used by the CPU. When writing to memory, the CPU writes ...
In all page table formats supported by IA-32 and x86-64, the 12 least significant bits of the page table entry are either interpreted by the memory management unit or are reserved for operating system use. In processors that implement the "no-execute" or "execution disable" feature, the most significant bit (bit 63) is the NX bit. The next ...
[1] [4] Conversely, the memory order is called weak or relaxed when one thread cannot predict the order of operations arising from another thread. [1] [4] Many naïvely written parallel algorithms fail when compiled or executed with a weak memory order. [5] [6] The problem is most often solved by inserting memory barrier instructions into the ...
Memory management (also dynamic memory management, dynamic storage allocation, or dynamic memory allocation) is a form of resource management applied to computer memory. The essential requirement of memory management is to provide ways to dynamically allocate portions of memory to programs at their request, and free it for reuse when no longer needed.
An overhead of 1 KiB of memory is required for maintaining page directories and page tables. When accessing this 1 MiB memory, each of the 256 page entries would be cached in the translation lookaside buffer (TLB; a cache that remembers virtual address to physical address translations for faster lookup on subsequent memory requests). Cluttering ...
A program is run via a process which can be multi-threaded (i.e. a software thread such as pthreads as opposed to a hardware thread). Different processes do not share a memory space so this discussion does not apply to two programs, each one running in a different process (hence a different memory space).
In operating systems, memory management is the function responsible for managing the computer's primary memory. [1]: 105–208 The memory management function keeps track of the status of each memory location, either allocated or free. It determines how memory is allocated among competing processes, deciding which gets memory, when they receive ...
