Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc. is an American developer and manufacturer of specialized technological products for the life science research and clinical diagnostics markets. The company was founded in 1952 in Berkeley, California , by husband and wife team David and Alice Schwartz , both graduates of the University of California, Berkeley.

While at Berkeley, she met fellow student David Schwartz, whom she married, and in 1952, the couple founded the life sciences research company Bio-Rad Laboratories with their joint savings of $720. [2] [3] [4] Schwartz was a researcher and director with the company, and has served on its board since its founding. [5]

In November 2018, a Delaware jury found that 10x Genomics infringed on several University of Chicago patents which were exclusively licensed to Bio-Rad. 10x Genomics were ordered to pay $24 million in damages to Bio-Rad and a 15% royalty on sales. [13] [14] 10x Genomics appealed the verdict but the decision was upheld in August 2020.
