The JCM800 was the first series produced after the contract expired. The name comes from Jim Marshall's initials, "J.C.M.", coupled with the meaningless "800" from the number plate on his car. It was later noted that "800" stood for the decade. For example, the JCM900 was released in 1990 and the JCM2000 was released in 2000. [1]
The DSL line does have a 6 button footswitch that can be purchased that allows switching between channels and modes for each channel. The JCM 2000 was touted as the best Marshall ever, with a question mark in the ads in various publications. They followed the 100W and 50W heads with the DSL401(40W) and 201(20W) combos, also with channel switching.
In fact, JCM-800s are every bit, if not more relevant than the current JCM-2000 series. I realize the model sections are a work in progress, just wanted to point that out. It's notable that Marshall actually reissued the JCM-800 amps some 15 years after discontinuing them.

The amplifier was reissued for the first time in 1988 (the 1959S), and again from 1991 to 1993 (the 1959X) and from 1993 to 1995 (the 1959SLP). [1] The SLP continued after 1995 but in 2000 Marshall added modifications to lower the noise floor (hum balance pot), reverted the negative feedback resistor to the 1968-69 value of 47 kΩ, and added an effects loop.
