John Loughlin (December 20, 1817 – December 29, 1891) was an Irish-born prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He was the first Bishop of Brooklyn , of the U.S. state of New York (1853–1891). Early life
It was the first Catholic school in the Diocese of Brooklyn. In 1926 St. James became one of three diocesan high schools for boys. In 1933 the school moved to Clermont Avenue, and was renamed Bishop Loughlin Memorial High after the Very Reverend John Loughlin, the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Brooklyn, who served from 1853 to 1891.
In 1853, Archbishop John Hughes appointed his vicar-general, Irish-born John Loughlin, former pastor of St. Patrick's on Mulberry St. as bishop of the new diocese. Loughlin chose St. James as his cathedral. [3] During his episcopate, Loughlin founded 120 parishes.
It became the cathedral of Brooklyn when the diocese was established in 1853. Brooklyn's first bishop, John Loughlin planned a new cathedral dedicated to the patroness of the diocese, the Immaculate Conception and its construction started in 1868 in Fort Greene, at Green Street and Clermont Avenue.
