This is a list of commands from the GNU Core Utilities for Unix environments. These commands can be found on Unix operating systems and most Unix-like operating systems. GNU Core Utilities include basic file, shell and text manipulation utilities. Coreutils includes all of the basic command-line tools that are expected in a POSIX system.
Ports of grep (within Cygwin and GnuWin32, for example) also run under Microsoft Windows. Some versions of Windows feature the similar qgrep or findstr command. [19] A grep command is also part of ASCII's MSX-DOS2 Tools for MSX-DOS version 2. [20] The grep, egrep, and fgrep commands have also been ported to the IBM i operating system. [21]
These commands can be found on Unix operating systems and most Unix-like operating systems. This is not a comprehensive list of all utilities that existed in the various historic Unix and Unix-like systems, as it excludes utilities that were not mandated by the aforementioned standard.
For example, the diff command operates on two files at a time. The -n option to xargs specifies how many arguments at a time to supply to the given command. The command will be invoked repeatedly until all input is exhausted. Note that on the last invocation one might get fewer than the desired number of arguments if there is insufficient input.
The command has a number of switches: a - number all lines; t - number lines with printable text only; n - no line numbering; string - number only those lines containing the regular expression defined in the string supplied. The default applied switch is t. nl also supports some command line options.
