Marathon Petroleum Corporation is an American petroleum refining, marketing, and transportation company headquartered in Findlay, Ohio. The company was a wholly owned subsidiary of Marathon Oil until a corporate spin-off in 2011.
Marathon's Detroit refinery has a crude oil refining capacity of 140,000 barrels per day, processing sweet and heavy sour crude oils into products such as gasoline and distillates.
Today, the expanded facility is the only petroleum refinery in Michigan, and it has a capacity of 140,000 barrels per day and around 540 employees. [23] The refinery received the Energy Star Award in 2007 and 2008 from the Environmental Protection Agency for reducing energy usage and protecting the environment through energy efficiency. [ 24 ]
In July 2024, Marathon agreed to a $241.5 million settlement with the US Department of Justice and the Environmental Protection Agency to resolve allegations of failing to obtain required permits at dozens of the company's oil and gas facilities on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota and releasing thousands of tons of illegal air pollution as a result.
