Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow formerly known as Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU), was established by the government of Uttar Pradesh on 8 May 2000 (Act No. 1248 (2)XVII-V-I-I-19-2000 Uttar Pradesh Adhiniyam Sankhya 23 of 2000).
The pattern of questions in the exam is almost fixed. Currently, the examination has objective type question paper for all the subjects and uses machine-readable Optical mark recognition answer sheets. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers.

The exam is three hours and is conducted only in English. It includes 60 questions, as follows: 30 multiple choice questions (MCQ - involving 10 questions of one mark each and 20 questions of two marks each), 10 multiple select questions (MSQ) and 20 numerical answer type (NAT) questions. Total marks are 100, 50 for MCQ, 20 for MSQ and 30 for NAT.
