The island has an area of 592.17 square kilometres (228.64 square miles). [1] It is the largest island of the Seto Inland Sea. As a transit between those two larger islands, Awaji originally means "the road to Awa", [2] the historic province bordering the Shikoku side of the Naruto Strait, now part of Tokushima Prefecture.
Awaji Kannon was the dream of real estate magnate Toyokichi Okuuchi. Construction on the statue and its base started in 1977 and took five years to complete. [1] It sat on a 5-story pedestal building that was 20 metres (66 ft) tall. There was also a sixth-floor observation deck within the statue. Okuchi managed the building until his death in 1988.

It is part of the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway, and crosses the busy and turbulent Akashi Strait (Akashi Kaikyō in Japanese).
The Thirteen Buddhas of Awaji Island（淡路島十三仏霊場, Awajishima jūsan butsu reijō）are a group of 13 Buddhist sacred sites on Awaji Island in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, in the eastern part of the Seto Inland Sea between the islands of Honshū and Shikoku. They are dedicated to the Thirteen Buddhas.
