This iPad model was announced by Apple on March 24, 2017 in a press release. [5] [6] [7] There has been confusion around its naming, being referred to as just "iPad" in marketing, [6] but called the "fifth-generation iPad" in official statements and specifications sheets, [8] [3] a title previously taken by 2013's iPad Air.
The ninth-generation iPad was discontinued on May 7, 2024, with the announcement of the iPad Air (6th generation) and the iPad Pro (7th generation). It was the last iPad model to have a home button, Lightning port and headphone jack. [5] The iPad 9th generation was later replaced with the 10th generation in October 2022.
Like the iPad Air, it has a 10.9-inch 2360x1640 Liquid Retina display; an increase from the previous 10.2-inch model, but it is not laminated. [7] The tenth-generation iPad uses an A14 Bionic processor, previously seen in the fourth-generation iPad Air and the iPhone 12 in 2020. The chip has a 6-core CPU, a 4-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine.
It is the fifth major iOS release that this model supports. The iOS 9 public beta was also compatible with it. This model has been supported for more than 4 years. iOS 9.3.5 is the latest and final version to support the Wi-Fi only iPad 3rd generation model while the Wi-Fi + Cellular models run iOS 9.3.6. [52]
The cellular model was released in-store a few weeks after the initial release of the device. [27] The release of the fourth-generation iPad led to the discontinuation of its predecessor, which angered many third-generation iPad users. [26] In response, Apple extended its 14-day return policy to 30 days.
