Mara Salvatrucha, commonly known as MS-13, is an international criminal gang that originated in Los Angeles, California, in the 1980s. Originally, the gang was set up to protect Salvadoran immigrants from other gangs in the Los Angeles area.
This is the reason the first cliques of Mara Salvatrucha formed in 1985 and 1988. From then, the gang grew rapidly because, at first, it provided protection and help for Salvadoran immigrants who were struggling to fit into their new community. Then, in the early 1990s the U.S Immigration and Naturalization service began suppressing street gangs.
