The college was established in 1984 and is named after Yashwantrao Chavan, former first Chief Minister of Maharashtra State and the former Deputy Prime Minister of India; since then, it has been under the administration of Nagar Yuwak Shikshan Sanstha, a subsidiary of Meghe Group.

The foundation stone for the Arts and Science College building at Vidyavihar was laid by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Yashwantrao Chavan, on March 18, 1960, and Amrutlal Yagnik, a noted scholar, assumed the role of the first principal of KJ Somaiya College of Arts & Science. [2]

The college building got inaugurated on 23 June 1962 by Yashwantrao Chavan. Its name was ‘Baramati College’ and started with 120 students and 12 faculty members. On 21 June 1969, the college was renamed ‘Tuljaram Chaturchand College’. Lt. S. T. Vanakudre was first principal of the college. [4]
