Before forming the company, J.B. Reiner had completed an apprenticeship in 'the art of an optician and scientific instrument maker' in 1891 and had gone on to work for E.B. Merrowitz Ltd, a branch of a well-known American optical company. In 1915, during the First World War, the company name was changed to Rayner & Keeler Ltd.

John Keeler (February 9, 1654 – May 19, 1717) was a member of the General Assembly of the Colony of Connecticut from Norwalk in the October 1698 session. He was the son of Ralph Keeler and Sarah Howes [ 2 ] and the brother of Samuel Keeler .
Keeler married Ada H. Servis (1859–1883) in 1878. After she died, he married Mattie Howard Lynde in 1888. [1] He had three sons, John Russell, Benjamin Carlos, and Howard Lynde. [4] Keeler died in a private New York City hospital from heart disease and pneumonia on October 19, 1899. He was buried in the Keeler family plot in Kensico Cemetery. [2]
