St. Mary's Academy is a private Catholic K-12 school in New Orleans, Louisiana run by the Sisters of the Holy Family. [3] Founded in 1867, it is one of the oldest Black Catholic schools in the country. It admits girls and boys until grade 7, and admits only girls for grades 8-12.

The Ursulines also began the first school of music in New Orleans. The Ursulines established an orphanage in the convent and one of the first hospitals in New Orleans. They worked in health care, and treated malaria and yellow fever among the slave population. The hospital usually had from thirty to forty patients, most of them soldiers. [5]
The Saint Mary's Orphan Asylum housed at that time 93 children (ages 2 to 13) and 10 sisters. The hurricane arrived quietly on September 7, 1900. The full force of the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 was not felt until the next day, September 8, and began to erode away the sand dunes that surrounded St. Mary's Orphanage.
