Worthington Steel is a publicly traded (NYSE:WS) steel processing company headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.Worthington Steel is an independent, intermediate processor of carbon flat-rolled steel in the United States, purchasing steel from integrated steel mills and mini-mills and custom processing it in areas such as type, length, width, thickness, shape and surface quality. Worthington Industries was founded in 1955 by John H. McConnell, a steel salesman. McConnell saw an opportunity for custom-processed steel and purchased his first load of steel by borrowing $600 against his 1952 Oldsmobile. He founded the company in Columbus, Ohio, where it is still headquartered.
In 1962, the company expanded production. It it opened a new plant costing US$ 2,500,000 (equivalent to US$28,684,211 in 2023), in Woodruff, South Carolina [ 11 ] and another plant manufacturings its steel thimble roller chains, in Morristown, Tennessee .
The group also has several service units in the roofing, security gate systems, and steel I-beam markets. While the holding company resides in Columbus, the units operate in many other locations including: Columbus, Wilmington , and Mason, Ohio and Atlanta, Georgia .
