Wheelchair basketball has been contested at the Summer Paralympic Games since the 1960 Summer Paralympics in Rome.. Winning the Paralympics is considered to be the highest honor in international wheelchair basketball, followed by the World Championships of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) for men and women and the respective intercontinental championships.
The 2020 Summer Paralympics women's tournament in Tokyo began on 25 August and ended on the 4 September 2021. The matches were played at the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza and the Ariake Arena. This was the fourteenth edition of the tournament since the tournament debut at the 1968 Summer Paralympics in Tel Aviv.
Joanne McDonald OC ONL (born 1952) is a Canadian wheelchair sport athlete and disability rights advocate. She played on the Canadian women’s national wheelchair basketball team from 1974 to 1985 and competed at the 1976, 1980, and 1984 Paralympic Games.

The team was led by Cal State Fullerton's women's basketball coach Billie Moore and had four future Hall of Famers on the roster: Ann Meyers, Nancy Lieberman, Lusia Harris, and Pat Summitt (then called Pat Head).
