Kamov was founded by Nikolai Ilyich Kamov, who started building his first rotary-winged aircraft in 1929, together with N. K. Skrzhinskii.Up to 1940, the year of Kamov plant establishment, they created many autogyros, including the TsAGI A-7-3, the only armed autogyro to see (limited) combat action.
In 1976, in response to the American attack helicopter competition that was won by the AH-64 Apache, the Soviets ordered a similar helicopter from the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant design bureau. The Kamov design bureau offered to develop another helicopter of the same class. Hence, a competition between the two design bureaus was announced.
