Prior to the construction of I-84, the corridor was served by Idaho State Highway 2 and Route A of the Sampson Trails system. [2] [16] U.S. Route 30 was created in 1926 under the national numbered highway system, traveling through southern Idaho along the historic Oregon Trail.
Under the original proposal, the highway would only exist in Idaho, from Payette to the Canada–US border north of Eastport. [6] When the plan was adopted by the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials on November 11, 1926, the route of US 95 had been approved south to Weiser, still existing solely in Idaho. [7]
US-95 continues into Idaho from southeastern Oregon as an undivided two-lane highway for the majority of its length. As it is the state's primary north–south highway, Idaho is in the process of widening US-95 to an Interstate-style divided four-lane highway, from the Oregon state line in the southwest to Eastport at the northern border with Canada at Kingsgate, British Columbia.
The Idaho state government designated Route 2, the North Pacific Highway, between the Washington border and St. Regis Pass as part of its original numbered highway system in 1914. [24] Other sections of I-90 were built over the Yellowstone Trail and U.S. Route 10, [25] though some parts of I-90 were cut as new roadway.
