Conversely, cartridge names often reflect nothing related to the cartridge in any obvious way. For example, the .218 Bee uses a bullet of 224/1000-inch diameter, fired through a .22-in bore, etc. The 218 and Bee portions of this cartridge name reflect nothing other than the desires of those who standardized that cartridge.
A few Model '92s chambered for .218 Bee were produced in 1936–38. [3] Rifles in .44-40 proved to be most popular, far outstripping sales of the other chamberings. The Winchester Models 53 (1924) and 65 (1933) were relabeled Model 1892s.
This model was chambered in the same calibers with the addition of the .25/20 and later .218 Bee. [6] The Model 1894 and its successors found particular favor in Canada, Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest, where precipitation combined with cold temperatures sometimes caused top-eject designs to freeze solid. In addition, the .218 Bee was created using the .32-20 as its parent cartridge. The .32-20 cartridge case has been used to create usable ammunition for the Nagant M1895. This is accomplished by removing .01" from the rim thickness and sizing the case in a specific reloading die (Lee Nagant 3 die set).
