Town of Pines is the home of Indiana State Road 520, a 0.2-mile-long (0.3 km) state highway connecting U.S. Highway 12 to U.S. Highway 20. It is the shortest state highway in Indiana. The Central Avenue station of the South Shore Line , also known as Pines station, served Town of Pines from 1927 until its demolition in the 1970s.
After leaving Beverly Shores, the route enters Town of Pines and has an all-way stop at the northern terminus of SR 520. SR 520 is the final connecting route to US 20 before the two separate regionally. [11] [13] After Town of Pines, the road curves due north back into the dunes and crossing the South Shore Line tracks.
In Portage, the route has intersections with both SR 249 and SR 149. The road now enters Burns Harbor and has interchanges with I-94 and SR 49, just south of Indiana Dunes National Park. The route heads northeast until Town of Pines, where it intersects with SR 520. After Pines, the route heads due east to US 421 in Michigan City. [5]
