The 69th Infantry Regiment is an infantry regiment of the United States Army.It is from New York City, part of the New York Army National Guard.It is known as the "Fighting Sixty-Ninth", [1] a name said to have been given by Robert E. Lee during the Civil War.
In 1864, Wilson was placed in command of a militia regiment, the 69th New York Regiment, by Governor Seymour. [ 1 ] On July 20, 1866, President Andrew Johnson nominated Wilson for appointment to the grade of brevet brigadier general of volunteers, to rank from March 13, 1865, and the United States Senate confirmed the appointment on July 26, 1866.

Nugent was brevetted Brigadier General for distinguished leadership of the 69th Regiment on March 13, 1865. The veterans of the Irish Brigade were honorably discharged and mustered out three months later; Nugent remained in the regular US Army for the next twenty years and was a formidable "Indian fighter" during the Great Plains Wars with the 13th and 24th Infantry Regiments.
