Starting as Dorval Airport, then Montréal–Dorval International Airport, the airport was renamed Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Trudeau's honour on January 1, 2004, by the federal government. The renaming had been announced in September 2003 by then Minister of Transport David Collenette.

A decision was made to consolidate Montreal's passenger traffic at Dorval, with scheduled flights and charter flights being shifted in 1997 and 2004, so Mirabel was relegated to the role of a cargo airport. In 1997, in order to simplify connecting flight, Dorval was chosen to receive all scheduled passenger flights. Mirabel was to remain operational but with limited traffic. Cargo and charter flight were to fly from Mirabel. From 2002 and 2006, ADM invested $716 million in the Dorval Airport.
In the late 1930s the airport was used by Canadian Associated Aircraft to build the Handley Page Hampden. Canada’s first air traffic control tower opened at the Saint-Hubert Airport on April 13, 1939. [6] It was Montreal's first and only airport until the opening of Dorval Airport (now Montréal–Trudeau International Airport) in 1941.
