Nepenthes vieillardii (/ n ɪ ˈ p ɛ n θ iː z ˌ v iː ɛ ˈ l ɑːr d i aɪ /; after Eugène Vieillard, collector of plants from New Caledonia and Tahiti between 1861 and 1867) is a species of pitcher plant endemic to the island of New Caledonia. Its distribution is the most easterly of any Nepenthes species.
Pycnandra acuminata is notable as one of the most prolific hyperaccumulators of trace metals known, actively absorbing nickel from the soil and concentrating it within the plant to a concentration of up to 25% nickel citrate as dry weight of the sap, which is turquoise-green in colour due to the nickel content. Libocedrus austrocaledonica is a species of Libocedrus, endemic to New Caledonia, occurring mainly in the southern half of the island (also one site in the northern half), at 750–1,400 m altitude in montane cloud forest scrub.
Following Meissner, the species continued to be placed in Knightia until 1975, when Lawrence Johnson and Barbara G. Briggs recognized the distinctness of two New Caledonian species of Knightia, particularly their prominent bracts, and transferred both to Eucarpha, [10] a transfer supported in 2006. [11]
New Caledonia was part of the supercontinent Gondwana, and separated from Australia 80 Ma. [6] However, geological evidence suggests that New Caledonia was submerged during Paleocene (ca. 65 Ma) and Eocene (until ca. 37 Ma). [7] The actual New Caledonian biota may then result from a total recolonization since the Oligocene. [8]
