John Paul Riddle (May 19, 1901 – April 6, 1989) was an American pilot and aviation pioneer, best known for training Allied air crews in WW2 and co-founding what later became Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU).
In 1926, the company added a flight school. In 1930, Embry–Riddle was incorporated into what is now American Airlines, and the flight school was closed. In 1939, the partners opened a new flight school – Embry–Riddle School of Aviation – in Miami, Florida, which provided training in what turned out to be the lead up to World War II.
Embry-Riddle moved to Daytona Beach, Florida in 1965 and was renamed Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 1970. Embry-Riddle opened its second campus in Prescott, Arizona in 1978. [ 2 ] Embry-Riddle purchased the former campus of Prescott College , which closed abruptly in 1974 from financial hardship.
The first RAF flight cadets began training in the United States in June 1941. The Army Air Corps (later Army Air Forces) maintained a small liaison detachment at each of these schools, however the RAF provided a cadre of officers for military supervision and training, while flight training was conducted by contract flying schools.
