Thomas & Friends (formerly known as Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends) is a children's media franchise created by Britt Allcroft and currently owned by Mattel.The franchise revolves around an ensemble cast of anthropomorphic steam locomotives and other vehicles, including the main protagonist Thomas the Tank Engine, who work on the Island of Sodor.
The franchise's first film, Thomas and the Magic Railroad, was released in July 2000 in the UK, US, and Canada. It featured new characters created by Allcroft, along with characters from the show that had introduced Thomas to the U.S., Shining Time Station.
The fictional native language of Sodor is "Sudric" or "Sudrian", a Goidelic language similar to Manx. Thomas goes out of his way to try and find the end of the rainbow to see what is magical there, but no matter where he goes, the end of the rainbow always seems to move. Thomas also ignores his job and his friends' warnings to slow down, which leads to him hitting a telephone pole and derailing.
