Current usage of the term "visual arts" includes fine art as well as applied or decorative arts and crafts , but this was not always the case.
Philip Guston (born Phillip Goldstein, June 27, 1913 – June 7, 1980) was a Canadian American painter, printmaker, muralist and draftsman. "Guston worked in a number of artistic modes, from Renaissance-inspired figuration to formally accomplished abstraction," [1] and is now regarded as one of the "most important, powerful, and influential American painters of the last 100 years". [2]
Mark Rothko (/ ˈ r É’ θ k oÊŠ / ROTH-koh; Markus Yakovlevich Rothkowitz until 1940; September 25, 1903 – February 25, 1970) was a Latvian American abstract painter. He is best known for his color field paintings that depicted irregular and painterly rectangular regions of color, which he produced from 1949 to 1970.
