The Bucegi Mountains area, whereof exist references since the 15th century, has been proposed for protection in 1936, due to peerless landscapes and great diversity of plant and animal species. This proposal was taken up only in 1990, when materialized through the Minister's order no. 7/1990.

The road reaches its highest point of 2,112 m (6,929 ft) above sea level at the southern portal of the Roki Tunnel, which opened in 1984. The tunnel is shared with Russia and was the longest within the Soviet Union upon its commissioning with a length of 3,730 m (2.32 mi). It is still the longest tunnel (partially) in Georgia.
The other side of the tunnel is now under Crystal Lake. Some of the road bed can be found near this lake which is a few miles up the road from Stumphouse Mountain. Locals state that prior to flooding the tunnel still contained tools and iron from the original construction.

The reservoir encompasses 3,300-acre (1,300 ha) of water, and a "full summer pool" of approximately 1,686 feet (514 m) above mean sea level. It is managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority and is primarily fed by the Toccoa River.
