The health system includes 51 hospitals, more than 800 non-acute facilities, and numerous assisted living facilities in the western half of the United States (Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Montana, New Mexico, and Texas).
Providence Health Systems was established by the Sisters of Providence of Holyoke in 1984. In 1998, Providence Health of Holyoke, Massachusetts merged with Allegany Health System and Eastern Mercy Health System in Radnor, Pennsylvania to form "Catholic Health East", which has 23 hospitals from Maine to Florida and was the eighth-highest-grossing hospital chain in the nation.

In July 2021 US Department of Justice announce another settlement with Prime Health Care and its CEO Prem Reddy concerning kickbacks, overcharging for medical implants, and billing for a non-eligible provider by using another provider's billing identity. Dr. Reddy paid $1,775,000; and Prime paid $33,725,000. [43]
