The U.S. Army Military History Institute pre-dates the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center by over 30 years. Formed in 1967 as the Military History Research Collection, a branch of the U.S. Army War College Library, the institute became the primary repository for unofficial Army historical materials.

In addition to its concert and ceremonial and concert bands, the 78th Army Band also features a diverse array of musical ensembles, including a jazz combo, brass quintet, Dixie-land band, and a rock band known as "Checkmate". Currently, the band's members are from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Virginia.
In 1838, a Cavalry School of Practice was established at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, which in time also became the Army's recruiting center for new mounted recruits. Commanded by Edwin Vose Sumner, the program was started from scratch.
