The South Apennine mixed montane forests is an ecoregion in the southern Apennine Mountains of southern Italy and Sicily. It has a Mediterranean climate, and is in the Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub biome. This ecoregion is restricted to the high mountain massifs of the regions of Basilicata, Calabria and the island of Sicily.
The WMA is located east of the Ouachita River and Louisiana Highway 559, 6 mi (9.7 km) west of Sicily Island, with Louisiana Highway 8 running along the bottom portion towards Sicily Island. La-913, La-914, and La-915 all provide WMA access. The Boeuf River runs through the northwest corner. [2]
The route is best described as mountain-rural. Because the route passes through the protected San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and Angeles National Forest, development is very limited. There are not many buildings between La Cañada Flintridge and Wrightwood save for Newcomb's Ranch, and forest service campgrounds and visitor centers.

The original idea for this trail originated in 1983 within a group of ambitious hikers. With the help of the Italian Alpine Club, the trail became a reality in 1995 in the first ever CamminaItalia ("Walk Italy"), an event in which a group of trekkers departed from a Sardinian coastal village and covered the entire trail in eight months.
