Coxen Hole in 1910. The city was founded in 1835 when several British families moved to Roatán from the Cayman Islands.It is named after the pirate Captain John Coxen/Coxon due the fact that during the 17th century Roatán was once home to over 5,000 pirates living all through the island.
Most of the infrastructure is on the western half of the island. The most populous town of the island is Coxen Hole, capital of Roatán municipality, located in the southwest. West of Coxen Hole are the settlements of Gravel Bay, Flowers Bay and Keyhole Bay on the south coast, and Sandy Bay, West End and West Bay on the north coast.
