[5] US 18/US 218/Iowa 27 pass a wind farm near Charles City. At the Floyd county line, US 18 and Iowa 27 become a limited-access road and angle slightly to the northeast, passing Rudd.
Iowa 44 was created on January 1, 1969, when the Iowa State Highway Commission reorganized the state's primary highway system. Iowa 44 was one of 26 state highways to receive a new route number. Iowa Highway 2 (Iowa 2) is a 251-mile-long (404 km) state highway which runs across the southernmost tier of counties in the U.S. state of Iowa. At no point along its route is Iowa 2 more than 15 miles (24 km) from the Missouri state line, except for a small section near its eastern terminus.
By 1947, the route had been extended in both directions. It began at Iowa 77 in Richland in the west, and ended at U.S. Highway 61 in the east. The original section from Olds to just south of Winfield was the only fully paved road at the time. The short segment from Iowa 78 to Winfield was designated Iowa 249. [4]
