James M. Magee was born in Evergreen, Pennsylvania (near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). He graduated from Yale University in 1899, where he was a member of Skull and Bones, [1]: 41 and from the law department of the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1902. He was admitted to the bar in 1903 and commenced practice in Pittsburgh.
According to Magee, construction of The Hill began with “no architect, no blueprints, the entire construction was laid out with me pacing and using a string and a transom”. [6] It took approximately 250 eight-ton truckloads of stone to create The Hill, [ 3 ] and the whole project was built by hand by the artist and a few aides that come and go.
Holly Renee Magee (March 30, 1959 – July 13, 2022), also known by her married name Renee Tucker, was an American former competition swimmer who represented the United States in the 100 meter backstroke at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec. In 1976, in Austin, Texas, she set a National High School Record in the 100-yard backstroke.

By 1800 James Magee's health was failing. In the fall of 1800 Magee and his wife joined Thomas Handasyd Perkins on a trip to Ballston Spa and Saratoga Springs, New York, partly for Magee's health. A few months after returning to Boston James Magee suffered the last of several strokes. He died on 2 February 1801, in his home at Roxbury.
