Santorini (Greek: Σαντορίνη, romanized: Santoríni, pronounced [sa(n)doˈrini]), officially Thira (Greek: Θήρα, romanized: Thíra, pronounced) or Thera, [a] is a Greek island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast from the mainland.

Ancient Thera (Greek: Αρχαία Θήρα) is the name of an archaeological site [1] from classical antiquity [2] on the island of Santorini, which sits on the top of a limestone hill called Mesa Vouno.
The next two sites listed were the Archeological site of Delphi and the Acropolis of Athens, in the following year. Five sites were added in 1988, two in 1989 and 1990 each, one in 1992, one in 1996, two in 1999, and one in 2007. The most recent site added was the Zagori Cultural Landscape, in 2023. There are no transnational sites in Greece.
The earliest excavations on the island of Santorini were conducted by French geologist F. Fouque in 1867 after some local people found old artifacts at a quarry. Later, in 1895–1900, the digs by German archeologist Baron Friedrich Hiller von Gaertringen revealed the ruins of ancient Thera on Mesa Vouno, which date from the archaic period ...
