The Jefferson Scholarship is a merit scholarship that provides four years of fully funded study at the University of Virginia in the United States. Considered one of the world's most prestigious [citation needed], the scholarship covers tuition and room and board, and also provides money for summer travel, independent research, and study abroad.
In the U.S., a grant is given on the basis of economic need, determined by the amount to which the college's Cost of Attendance (COA) [6] [7] exceeds the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), [8] calculated by the U.S. Department of Education from information submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid following formulas set by the United States Congress.
Work and Travel USA is a United States Government program that allows foreign university students to travel and work within the United States for at least 3 months. Run by the U.S. Department of State , the program has approximately 100,000 participants between ages 18 and 30 each year.
One of the earliest cultural exchanges to be considered part of U.S. Public Diplomacy occurred when Nelson Rockefeller, named coordinator of Commercial and Cultural Affairs for the American Republics, encouraged journalists from Latin America to visit the United States in 1940 as part of the exchange of programs program with Latin America. Currently, the program makes 230-250 (the number fluctuates, depending on funding) national scholarships available to any high school student between the ages of 15-18.5 with a 2.5 or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale, and who is a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident. Applications are due in November of the year prior to the scholarship year.
Established in 2016, the program was founded with the aim of preparing students to address complex global issues. Scholars receive funding support to pursue any graduate degree at Stanford. Knight-Hennessy Scholars was founded in 2016 with a $400 million pledge from Phil Knight, the co-founder of Nike and a Stanford alum. [1]

The Morehead-Cain Scholarship (originally the Morehead Scholarship) was the first merit scholarship program established in the United States. [1] [2] [better source needed] It was founded at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1951 and was named for its benefactors, John Motley Morehead III and the Gordon and Mary Cain Foundation.
