Younkers Inc. (/ ˈ j ɒ ŋ k ər z /) [2] is an American online retailer and former department store chain founded as a family-run dry goods business in 1856 in Keokuk, Iowa. The retailer had evolved over more than 150 years to include a presence in locations throughout Iowa and bordering states in the Midwest region of the United States.
Their flagship store moved to this location in November 1899. [2] The original Tea Room opened in 1913 and was replaced in 1927. The building installed the first escalator in Iowa, known as the "electric stairs", in this building in 1939. [2] Younkers closed their downtown Des Moines location on August 12, 2005.

On October 31, 2005, Saks announced that it was selling Herberger's and its other Northern Department Store Group stores (Carson Pirie Scott, Bergner's, Boston Store, and Younkers) to Bon-Ton Stores in a $1.1 billion deal; the transaction was completed on March 6, 2006. [1]
J.L. Brandeis & Sons, commonly referred to by Midwesterners as Brandeis, was a chain of department stores located in the Omaha, Nebraska area started by Jonas L. Brandeis in 1881. It was purchased by Younkers for $33.9 million (~$78 million in 2023) in 1987, [ 1 ] when the stores were converted to the Younkers name.
The Bon-Ton Stores chain doubled in size in November 2005 with the $1.1 billion (~$1.65 billion in 2023) purchase of the 142 stores of Saks' Northern Department Store Group, headquartered in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The corporate headquarters remained in York, Pennsylvania, but the merchandising headquarters was relocated to Milwaukee.
