The Alfa Pendular high speed train is a six car electric multiple unit (EMU), which is derived from and closely resembles the Giugiaro designed Italian Fiat-Ferroviaria ETR 480 Pendolino train. The bogies had to be redesigned to operate on Portugal's 1,668 mm (5 ft 5 + 21 ⁄ 32 in) Iberian gauge track.
The rail network will be able to connect Lisbon to Porto with speeds as high as 300km/h, and in a total travel time of 75 minutes without stops, and 105 minutes with stops. The new high-speed line will have stops in Leiria , Coimbra , Aveiro , Vila Nova de Gaia , apart from the already mentioned in Lisbon-Santa Apolónia and Porto-Campanhã .
On 21 January 2013, two trains crashed on the Portuguese Northern Line in Alfarelos. 25 people were injured and the line was closed for three days. On 31 July 2020, an Alfa Pendular Train collided with a track maintenance vehicle at Soure, Portugal. Two people were killed and 43 were injured, three seriously.

Albufeira-Ferreiras is a stop for long-distance trains between Faro and Lisbon. As of August 2024, there are five trains to and from Lisbon every day; two Alfa Pendular and three Intercidades services. [2] Extra trains occasionally run on summer weekends.
