Mount Lavinia (Sinhala: ගල්කිස්ස, Tamil: கல்கிசை) is a suburb in Colombo, Sri Lanka located within the administrative boundaries of the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia municipal limits. The area is a mostly residential suburb, known as Colombo's beach retreat it is famed for its "Golden Mile" of beaches. [1] [2]
Dehiwela, Mount Lavinia attained Municipal status in December 1959. Dehiwela Mount Lavinia as a Local body of 6 wards extending over a land extent of only 16.3 km 2 (1,630 ha (4,000 acres)). Due to rapid urban growth and for administrative reasons this area was extended and divided into 19 wards in 1959 and given Municipal status.
Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia municipality is the second largest in Sri Lanka covering 21.09 km 2 (8.14 sq mi). It lies to the south of the Colombo Municipal Council area separated by the Dehiwala canal which acts as the northern boundary of the municipality.

The Mount Lavinia Hotel, in Mount Lavinia, Sri Lanka, is a 275-room hotel, situated at 100 Hotel Road in Mount Lavinia. It is recognised as one of the oldest and most famous hotels in the country. It has been continuously operating as a hotel since 1947, but was initially constructed as the governor's residence in 1806.
The Mount Lavinia Grama Niladhari Division has a Buddhist majority (56.0%), a significant Muslim population (16.9%) and a significant Hindu population (10.8%). In comparison, the Ratmalana Divisional Secretariat (which contains the Mount Lavinia Grama Niladhari Division) has a Buddhist majority (70.0%) and a significant Muslim population (11.3%) [2]
