The first state railway line in German South West Africa was the connection between Swakopmund and Windhoek, built in 1902 during Imperial Germany's colonial rule. In 1914 this line was extended to Walvis Bay, with a railtrack very close to the shore of the Atlantic Ocean.
It is part of the TransNamib railway network. Omaruru is situated on the Kranzberg—Otavi line, completed in 1906 during Imperial Germany's colonial rule of German South West Africa. [1] Omaruru connects via Otavi to the north of Namibia via the so-called "Northern Extension", built between 2002 and 2012 to connect Tsumeb with Oshikango. [2]
TransNamib operated 2,883 km of rail in 1995. Since then, further track has been added to the network through the Northern Extension. It operates on 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in) Cape gauge. While focus has been primarily on freight services, passenger services are an important component of TransNamib and provided under the Starline logo.
The beginnings of organised travel and transport routes in the territory of South West Africa, today Namibia, have not yet been established.This is due to the lack of any written records relating to roads prior to the twilight of the 19th century. [1]

Swakopmund was the starting point of the first state railway line in German South West Africa.The railway station was built in 1901, as a terminal on the Imperial Germany's colonial Kaiserliche Eisenbahn line connecting Swakopmund with the capital Windhoek. [2]
