The first two optical mice, first demonstrated by two independent inventors in December 1980, had different basic designs: [1] [2] [3] One of these, invented by Steve Kirsch of MIT and Mouse Systems Corporation, [4] [5] used an infrared LED and a four-quadrant infrared sensor to ...
Combines optical sensor with an accelerometer, allowing the mouse to track speeds in excess of 500 inches per second, and more than 16G in acceleration. 108 g (3.8 oz) (without cable) 144 g (5.1 oz) (with cable)
So-called "hard mousepads" for gamers or optical/laser mice also exist. Most optical and laser mice do not require a pad, the notable exception being early optical mice which relied on a grid on the pad to detect movement (e.g. Mouse Systems). Whether to use a hard or soft mousepad with an optical mouse is largely a matter of personal preference.
